Star Trek Online is a free-to-play third-person action MMORPG set in the Star Trek universe. The game is maintained and released by Perfect World Entertainment. It launched in 2010 and features regular content updates called "seasons". These include new gameplay features, elements, mission packs and generally just more content to play around with. The game is available both on Steam, and Perfect World’s own distribution platform, Arc. Originally it required a subscription fee, but this was dropped a bit more than one year after launch.
In this game, you play as a rookie human pilot in the Star Trek universe. You complete story missions, gain the ability to pilot better and stronger ships, and have more possibilities unlocked as you progress in the game. There are two layers in this game: ship-to-ship combat in space, and ground mission similar to other MMOs. The former is slow-paced and bit more strategical; the latter is action-based just like Neverwinter.
What makes this game unique among MMORPGs is that it features an editor, which players can use to create their own adventures using a wide arsenal of assets, maps, scripts, monsters and other elements available to them. Then they can publish these in the Foundry, from which the regular players can pick any published adventure they want to play. They gain XP, loot and money for completing these just like for regular quests, and at the end of an adventure they can give feedback to the author. This works in the same way as it does in the studio’s other similar game, Neverwinter.
